ACN Friday Find: The Dryes Welcome December With "Christmas Is Callin'"

We all know that the duos comprise a significant part of country music - names such as Brooks & Dunn, Dan + Shay, Maddie & Tae, and Florida Georgia Line prove that. However, it's been a while since a husband-and-wife pair has consistently topped the charts. The Dryes, who first gained prominence on Season 22 of The Voice, could very well fill that gap in country music soon. Consisting of Katelyn and Derek Drye the quickly rising duo has a promising future in this genre. We're obsessed with their newly released holiday song, "Christmas Is Callin'"!

In the creative process of this track, the couple pointed out country music's emphasis on organic instrumentals. They noted that holiday classics from Elvis Presley and Bing Crosby employed similar stripped-back production, letting elements like the fiddle riffs stand out. "I think it crosses over well, and we have a twang already, so it kind of works," Derek shared with ACN. "It's the one time a year that everyone feels the same sentiment, and the music usually matches it," he continued.

Katelyn also believes that the old-school hits best capture the spirit of Christmas; she embraces the homey qualities of these songs and country music. For her, Lainey Wilson's "Christmas Cookies" heavily inspired the writing and artistic direction of the song. The couple made sure to incorporate such coziness, as well as traditional influences, into their own work. "We wrote this song in an hour, and it just kind of flowed out," said Katelyn.

The couple's goofy side also shines through in "Christmas Is Callin'" - one particular line, "Bring your uncle's ugly sweater, I like the one with tassels hanging from places we ain't naming," echoes the nature of Katelyn's family on her dad's side. One time, Katelyn literally peed her pants laughing at her their holiday antics, now an embarrassing story she looks back on fondly. Derek's grandpa shares this strength for unhinged humor.

Katelyn has found joy in decorating for the holidays since childhood, a passion and art form she now shares with Derek. She grew up in a musical family, who always took Christmas jam sessions and potlucks very seriously. "There's memories with everything, and so Christmas is our favorite time of the year. We love going all out for it," Katelyn told us. They find guilty pleasure in Frank Sinatra's Christmas music, which appeared a lot in each of their Spotify Wrapped playlists. "As soon as it starts getting cold out, I'm immediately like - I wake up, go in the kitchen, fix coffee and put on Frank Sinatra," Katelyn said. "It's just so cozy." She also associates positive childhood memories with "Blue Christmas" - the Kelly Clarkson version especially draws her in.

With vivid imagery and irresistible melodies, The Dryes highlight what makes the holidays special in "Christmas Is Callin." Blending folk, classic country, jazz, and blues into one track, the duo blesses us with a heartwarming seasonal anthem. We hope this song brightens your day and fills you with holiday cheer, just like it did for us!
