Carín León and Kacey Musgraves have officially brought their cross-cultural, genre-bending duet “Lost in Translation” to vivid, cinematic life with the release of its music video, a sun-soaked, tequila-tinged love story filmed in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco.

Directed by the visionary duo Running Bear (Alexa Stone and Stephen Kinigopoulos), the video is as lush and magnetic as the song itself, a meeting of worlds where music, emotion, and body language do all the talking. Over candlelight and cocktails, Musgraves and León embody the universal spark of connection that defies language.
“This really cute idea came about these people meeting and not being able to speak the same language, but love language and body language is universal and you don’t really need words for that,” Musgraves shares of the video.
That idea, that love doesn’t always need translation, sits at the heart of “Lost in Translation.” The duet merges León’s regional Mexican roots with Musgraves’ soft, shimmering brand of country-pop, creating something that feels both timeless and daringly fresh.
For Musgraves, who grew up in Texas surrounded by both Western swing and Norteño influences, the collaboration was more than a creative challenge, it was a homecoming of sorts. “I’ve always loved exploring the borders of Country and where it blends with other styles like Norteño and some regional Mexican sounds that I heard a lot of in Texas.”
León, known for pushing the boundaries of regional Mexican music, found in Musgraves a kindred spirit. “I relate my career and hers in the way that she approaches other genres,” he says. The two first connected in Nashville, where Musgraves brought along trusted collaborators Amy Allen and Shane McAnally. Before writing their own duet, León and Musgraves warmed up by singing Juan Gabriel and Rocío Dúrcal’s classic “Fue un Placer Conocerte.” “It was one of my favorite songs,” León recalls. “And she knew all the words.”
That spontaneous connection turned into creative chemistry. With producer Julian Bunetta at the helm, “Lost in Translation” took shape, weaving León’s vibrant horns and rhythmic textures with Musgraves’ ethereal delivery. The result is a track that nods to the golden age of Mexican duets while carving out a space entirely its own, nostalgic yet modern, tender yet electric.
“Even though we speak different languages, we’re all the same, you know?” Musgraves says. León adds, “I’m so blessed to be working with Kacey. All good stuff is going to come.”
If “Lost in Translation” proves anything, it’s that music, like love, doesn’t need words to be understood.
