Clay Street Unit and Lindsay Lou Paint a Haunting Portrait of Heartache on “Choctaw County”

There’s something timeless about a song that sounds like it’s been rustling through the pines for decades before finding its way to tape. Denver-based roots sextet Clay Street Unit capture exactly that feeling on their latest release, “Choctaw County," a wistful, pedal steel-soaked duet with acclaimed singer-songwriter Lindsay Lou, out now via the band’s new label home, Leo33.

From the opening lines, “In Choctaw County just over the hill, a stone's throw away from where time it stood still," the song unfolds like a slow walk through memory, tracing the contours of lost love and the quiet ache of time slipping by. Lead singer Sam Walker’s voice carries the weight of reflection, gravelly yet tender, while Lou’s honeyed harmonies drift through like a ghost of what once was. Together, they breathe life into a narrative that feels both personal and universal, the kind of story every small town seems to hold in its soil.

“Choctaw County” is a masterclass in restraint. Brad Larrison’s mournful pedal steel sighs between verses, and Jack Cline’s banjo adds a subtle shimmer of nostalgia, grounding the song firmly in Americana’s storied tradition. The rest of the band, Scottie Bolin (mandolin/vocals), Brendan Lamb (drums), and Jack Kotarba (bass) weave a soundscape that’s as expansive as the plains and as intimate as a front porch confession.

The heart of the song lies in its emotional paradox, that the time “wasted” on love can also be the best days of one’s life. It’s a simple truth, but one that Walker and Lou deliver with the kind of sincerity that can’t be faked.

“Left me full of regret when you packed up and left / Choctaw County, me and Choctaw County behind.”

“It’s a song about two people looking back on a relationship in the place they grew up, one from the perspective of someone who left and one who stayed,” says Walker of the track. “It’s about what could have been and holding onto the memories they shared together when they were young. We really tried to match the melody with the mood and the lift in the last chorus plays into that feeling of lingering regret and how life could’ve played out.”

“Choctaw County” feels like a postcard from another era, one sent from the edge of heartbreak, sealed with dust and longing. It’s a testament to Clay Street Unit’s ability to blend roots authenticity with emotional storytelling, crafting music that lingers long after the final note fades.

With this release, the band doesn’t just cement their place in the modern Americana landscape, they remind us that great songs don’t have to shout to be heard. Sometimes, all it takes is a voice weathered by time, a steel guitar crying softly in the background, and a story that hits just close enough to home.
