Cliff & Susan, the married country duo known for their tireless touring schedule and rich musical chemistry, are turning a new page with the release of their latest single, "West Virginia". The track delivers a poignant blend of lyrical storytelling and sonic depth.
Produced by Nashville’s acclaimed mix engineer Colt Capperrune, "West Virginia" offers more than just a place name. It’s a story wrapped in metaphor, told from the perspective of a young man leaving behind a hometown love named Virginia. The emotional ballad captures the aching pull between roots and wings, love and the need to move on. With Richmond as the backdrop and a haunting sense of hindsight laced through every note, the title carries a clever double meaning, both a destination and a parting sentiment.
“This story isn’t ours, but it is someone’s,” says Cliff Prowse. “I think a lot of people have felt the pull between love and leaving.”
The release is complemented by a visualizer filmed in the historic McKinney Cotton Mill in Fort Worth, Texas, a setting that mirrors the rustic, weathered emotion of the song. The visuals pair seamlessly with the track’s lush instrumentation and aching vocal delivery, creating a complete sensory experience.
Known for their high-energy shows and often topping 200 performances a year, Cliff & Susan have built their reputation on heartfelt songwriting and musical versatility. From fiddle to piano, harmonies to hooks, they have steadily carved out a space in modern country that prizes authenticity and storytelling. "West Virginia" feels like a natural evolution of their artistry: more cinematic, more intimate, and deeply resonant.
The track features an all-star lineup of musicians: Cliff takes lead vocals and plays both resonator and acoustic guitar, while Susan provides background vocals. Gabe Klein brings warmth on B3 organ, Wurli, and keys, and Smith Curry, whose credits include work with Taylor Swift, Randy Travis, and Jason Aldean, adds signature touches on steel guitar. Rounding out the rhythm section is Lester Estelle Jr. (Kelly Clarkson, Big & Rich) on drums and percussion, with Capperrune himself contributing bass and electric guitar. The visual content was developed by 613 Media in Fort Worth.
Written by the duo themselves, West Virginia is more than just a song. It’s a cinematic chapter in the growing narrative of Cliff & Susan. With this release, Cliff & Susan continue to strike a powerful chord with fans who value music that’s as emotionally rich as it is musically compelling. "West Virginia" might not be their personal story, but it’s a story many of us know all too well.
