BMI rolled out the red carpet last Thursday (Aug. 21) as country powerhouse Cody Johnson and global superstar Carrie Underwood gathered in the organization’s creative lobby to toast their chart-topping duet, “I’m Gonna Love You.” The event brought together two of country music’s most commanding voices, alongside songwriters Kelly Archer, Travis Denning, Chris Stevens, and producer Trent Willmon, for a celebration that was equal parts heartfelt, spiritual, and a testament to the enduring power of a great song.

The soaring ballad, written nine years ago anchors Johnson’s Leather Deluxe Edition and has now become his fourth consecutive No. 1 hit. For Underwood, it marks an astonishing 29th career chart-topper. Yet beneath the accolades, the afternoon was about something deeper: the song’s winding journey, the unwavering belief behind it, and the faith that finally brought it to life.
“I want you to know that my heart as an artist lives in the song,” Johnson told the packed room of industry peers. The Texas native shared how he had once set the track aside, only to find himself returning to it time and time again. “That song earned a brand in my heart, and I couldn’t get over it. It was like the love that got away,” he recalled. “From the very beginning, I said it had to be Carrie. It was Carrie or nothing.”
Underwood, gracious and glowing, echoed Johnson’s sentiments as she reflected on the song’s journey from demo to chart-topper. “There’s so much about the music business that’s unsure. You write a song you think is incredible and it might never find a home, until it does,” she said. “But God knows what He’s doing. I feel very blessed to have played a part in this song’s journey. From the first time I met Cody, I just knew I liked him, and when this came along it was never a question.”
The No. 1 party, emceed by BMI’s Leslie Roberts and sponsored by Studio Bank, highlighted not only the creative victories but also the human ones. Ron Cox made a special presentation on behalf of Johnson, Underwood, and the songwriters to the Different Day Foundation, a nonprofit founded by Johnson and his wife, Brandi, which supports women survivors of prostitution, trafficking, and addiction on their path to healing.
What could have been just another industry milestone felt instead like a genuine family gathering, stitched together by music, faith, and gratitude. For Johnson, it was another step in a career defined by grit and conviction. For Underwood, it was a chance to once again lend her voice to a song that mattered. And for everyone in the room, it was proof that the best country songs aren’t just written, they’re lived, wrestled with, and cherished until the timing is finally right.
