One of the most prominent Country Music Awards categories is the Music Video of the Year. This category encapsulates music videos that are fan favorites and are perfect sidekicks to songs that have been popular this past year. The award will go to the artist and director(s). Here are your nominees!
“Dirt Cheap” – Cody Johnson
Director: Dustin Haney
“Dirt Cheap” is a cinematic music video that is quite a tear jerker. Displaying an older man refusing to sell his house, he reminisces on his experiences and memories on the land. With cut scenes of a little girl swinging and having fun in the yard, the man realizes what is truly important to him. The premise of the song and music video is that experiences are worth more than any sum of money. This video implements different sections of the music pausing for characters to talk, which give the music video a more realistic skit aspect.
“I Had Some Help” – Post Malone (Feat. Morgan Wallen)
Director: Chris Villa
“I Had Some Help” creates a retro vibe and even implements one of Post Malone’s other songs, “Chemical” in the intro. The video takes place in a bar and has super interesting camera angles which even include Post Malone following the camera and getting thrown out of the bar onto the lens. This video is a very light-hearted and silly representation of the song with karaoke, trucks doing tricks, and even fireworks to top it off at the end.
“I’m Not Pretty” – Megan Moroney
Directors: Jeff Johnson, Megan Moroney
With Megan Moroney herself being a credited director, this music video is impressive out of the gate. This video has a fun concept with many intricate scenes of classrooms and mean girls. The cinematography of the video gives it a very exciting twist with different color schemes and an upbeat vibe. With the concept of the song being about confidence and brushing off past relationships, this video does a great job of painting a picture of a possible real life situation between exes and new love interests.
“The Painter” – Cody Johnson
Director: Dustin Haney
With his second nomination, The Painter is a perfect representation of a love sparked from a bar backed with an uplifting tune. Similarly to his other nominated music video, this video implements different sections where the music pauses for character dialogue which is a very unique aspect of Cody Johnson’s videos. With a key line in the song phrasing that his life was black and white but she’s the painter, the music video utilizes black and white scenes when it is just the singer, and colored scenes when he is with his partner. With these details, it is no wonder that this video was nominated for this CMA.
“Wildflowers and Wild Horses” – Lainey Wilson
Director: Patrick Tracy
This music video gives a very old-western vibe with a warm filter covering the video and outdoor scenes. The beautiful scenes of horses, sunsets, and horizons behind a crackling fire paints the picture that the song is meant to portray. The camera angles and cinematography conveys power and confidence for the singer Lainey Wilson, who is essentially the only relevant character in the video. This video is the embodiment of country music and it is clear that it is a good candidate for this nomination.
With the Country Music Awards being Wednesday November 20th, time is ticking down until the winner of the Music Video of the Year is revealed. As this is just one of the many award categories up for grabs this year, the CMAs are going to be an exciting day for you and your favorite country artists.
