Being apart of a Grammy winning project can feel like stepping onto another planet, and for Free, it was a surreal affirmation. Reflecting on his work on the Grammy-winning Jelly Roll album Beautifully Broken, he admits the experience was grounding.
“It’s super easy to have imposter syndrome in this industry… I’ve definitely had my moments of doubt. But when your work is recognized and celebrated by not only your peers, but people you look up to on such a major scale, it is reassuring. When Beautifully Broken won, I thought, ‘Okay, I think we’re onto something here.’”
Recognition from industry giants like Jelly Roll has only added fuel to his fire.
“It means the world to have someone like that not only recognize your talent, but to say it out loud, especially on such a large platform. I wasn’t expecting that. It still doesn’t feel real.”

“I’d say it mostly adds fuel. I’ve always had the mindset that I want to write and release the best music possible…but then to have folks hyping you up like that— it just makes me that much more excited to keep going.”

“The heartbreak came first for sure, I channeled a few different heartbreaks—and kinds of heartbreaks—while writing this one. I think the way the song can translate to a lot of different types of relationships is one of the reasons I love it so much.”
The track walks a delicate line: melodically slick yet rooted in the South. Free says that balance was intentional, born from a song originally written for another artist.
“I wouldn’t say I have a ‘signature sound’ because I love to pull in influences from genuinely all genres, but I’d say it definitely sounds like it was made by a twenty-something who grew up in The Triangle.”

The narrator of “Let U Go” would rather live with ghosts than confront the finality of a breakup, a sentiment Free knows all too well.
“I think it’s relatable because letting go can be one of the hardest things to do. When it comes to a breakup, losing a loved one or anything like that, most of the time you’d rather them still be there with you. It’s often easier to find comfort in clinging to memories or playing pretend than facing the facts.”
