Jelly Roll’s Journey: From Country Stage to 5K Glory

Country sensation Jelly Roll, known for his soulful tunes and down-to-earth charm, has added another feather to his cap: crossing the finish line of his first 5K race! But this wasn’t just any race—it was the 2 Bears 5K in Los Angeles, hosted by none other than comedic maestros Tom Segura and Bert Kreischer, as part of the uproarious Netflix Is A Joke comedy festival. And let’s just say, Jelly Roll brought his A-game!

Earlier this year, when news broke that Jelly Roll was lacing up his sneakers and hitting the pavement in preparation for a 5K, fans were buzzing with excitement. But nobody could anticipate the sheer determination and grit he would bring to the race day.

Since January, Jelly Roll—also known as Jason Bradley DeFord when he’s not on stage—has been on a fitness journey that’s not only transformed his physique but also his outlook on life. Shedding between 50 to 70 pounds on top of the remarkable 200 he had already lost in previous years, Jelly Roll wasn’t just chasing a finish line; he was chasing a healthier, happier version of himself.

As he approached the final stretch of the 3.1-mile race, Jelly Roll couldn’t contain his excitement. "I couldn’t walk a mile when I started trying to do this back in January,” he shared with Entertainment Tonight. “So the fact that we got three-point-whatever it was done today, I feel really, really good about it. I left here feeling really motivated."

But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Jelly Roll admitted the race was tougher than expected. “I feel great, man. I’m a little tired,” he confessed. “A little bit harder than I thought it was, but it’s awesome, man.” Yet, with every step, he pushed through, fueled by the cheers of supporters and the camaraderie of fellow runners.

One of the most heartwarming moments of the day was witnessing the impact of Jelly Roll’s journey on others. “I think the coolest thing is how many people stopped to tell us that they were motivated by us, other big guys,” he reflected. “It was just really cool to see—what an eclectic group of people. There was a man running in a bear suit."

And as Jelly Roll crossed the finish line, he shared a poignant moment with Bert Kreischer, a testament to the bonds forged through shared challenges and triumphs.

“I’m surrounded by friends and family, me and [Kreischer] shared a real tear together coming through the finish line,” he revealed on the Today Show.

But Jelly Roll isn’t one to rest on his laurels. Oh no, he’s already eyeing the next challenge! “Next year, half marathon. We’re saying it right now,” he declared with a grin. “I’m going to speak for them—we’re gonna do the 2 Bears 5K again, but we’re going to do a half marathon before.”

So, as Jelly Roll tunes up for his next adventure, fans can’t help but cheer him on every step of the way. From the country stage to the racing track, Jelly Roll’s journey is an inspiration to us all: a reminder that with determination and a sprinkle of Southern charm, anything is possible. Keep on rollin’, Jelly!
