Karin Ann is quickly emerging as one of music’s most compelling voices. Recently hailed as “Gen-Z’s new alt-pop protagonist,” the rising artist is back with her striking new single, "i was never yours." Co-written with Suki Waterhouse and Harrison Whitford of Phoebe Bridgers’ band, and produced by Benjamin Lazar Davis (Maya Hawke), the track is a genre-defying blend of folk, bluegrass, and country that refuses to be boxed in, creating a sound that feels both intimate and expansive.

The release of the single will coincide with the premiere of its official music video, a carefully crafted visual that brings the song to life in a unique and immersive way. Set entirely during a live performance, the video offers fans a fly-on-the-wall perspective of what it is like to see Karin Ann on stage. From the subtle sway of the crowd to the raw energy of her delivery, the video captures a sense of immediacy and intimacy, making viewers feel as though they are in the front row of a sold-out show. It’s a rare peek behind the curtain, highlighting not just the music but the artistry, charisma, and emotional intensity that Karin Ann brings to every performance.
"Writing this song came about very naturally and very quickly," Karin Ann shared with All Country News. "I had the start of the song in my notes and voice memos on my phone for a few months before the session and in the session it took us maybe half a day to get a full demo done. It was a very fun process and I got to work with very cool people on it and I think the song reflects that. this song is about choosing freedom, and i think the whole process of creating it was very freeing too"
Lyrically, “i was never yours” is as cutting as it is liberating. Karin Ann sings with quiet defiance, unraveling a relationship that was never built to last. Lines like “better that I leave you now ‘cause I’ll just keep on running / married in a year or two with kids I never wanted” confront societal expectations head-on, while “you thought I’d be your green light, but I’m running past your stop sign” makes it clear she refuses to be cornered by someone else’s vision of her life.
What makes the song resonate even deeper is how it straddles genres, its folk-inspired storytelling, bluegrass textures, and country sensibilities all working in harmony to create a sound that feels timeless yet undeniably fresh. It is both confessional and anthemic, the kind of song that lingers long after it ends.
With “i was never yours,” Karin Ann doesn’t just tell a story, she claims her narrative. And with a live performance video that gives fans the unfiltered truth of her stage presence, this release is more than a single. It’s a statement.
