Tenille Towns & Bryan Adams Premiere Chilling Visuals For "The Thing That Wrecks You"

Across all genres, every artist seemed to put out some emotionally loaded projects a couple New Music Fridays back. Given the record-breaking weather conditions across the country, which included heavy rain, storms, and even snow, February 24th turned out to be the perfect day for this type of song. For pure country music, we have the sentimental “Light On In The Kitchen” by Ashley McBryde. On the alternative side of things, we have Good Riddance by Gracie Abrams and High Drama by Adam Lambert. Somewhere in between is the new track from Tenille Towns and Bryan Adams, “The Thing That Wrecks You,” whose simple yet symbolic music video just premiered today.

Filmed solely inside of a dimly lit tunnel, the visuals accentuate the song’s chilling and haunting qualities. Though Tenille and Bryan don’t ever appear in the same shot until almost the end, we can gather that the singers are running towards each other. With an element of resistance, as well as segments where they’re completely on the ground, the music video adds poignant dimensions to an already complex narrative.

“From a Fed-Ex letter to travelling across a loading dock in a music video, this whole adventure has been insane," reflects Tenille. "Bryan Adams directed ‘The Thing That Wrecks You’ music video, and it was amazing working with him in this experience.”

The song essentially sounds like a crossover between Lady A and The 1975, with a hint of Carrie Underwood. We loved the way Tenille and Bryan’s voices built on and harmonized with each other, increasing the song’s intensity and impact. The call-and-response section during the second verse especially stood out to us. Both singers show the range of techniques they can utilize, creating a multitude of storytelling effects - from soft whispers to a powerful belt.

If you loved “The Thing That Wrecks You” too, keep your eyes peeled for new music from Tenille! A phenomenal follow-up to her 2022 album, Masquerades, is in the works. She's also hitting the road very soon, on her SIDE A+B tour. Trust us, you don't want to miss her live shows!
