The Dixie Chicks announced on Thursday, June 25, that they have dropped "Dixie" from their official name.
While the trio hasn't publicly discussed the name change, they dressed their website's home page with the following statement: "We want to meet this moment."
The origins of "Dixie" can be traced back to the Confederate States of America during the US Civil War Era. The term refers to the southern states around the Mason-Dixie line known as "Dixieland." These states made up the Confederate States of America during the US Civil War, which were largely in support of slavery.
Along with their name change, The Chicks released a new music video and song, "March March," from their upcoming album, Gaslighter, set for release on July 17. The album is the trio's first album release in 14 years.
