Country music has always been about connection, one voice, one song and one story finding someone exactly when they need it most.
For Chicago-area cancer patient Randi Bonilla Greenwood, that connection has long come through the music and remarkable resilience of Randy Travis. This week, the country icon turned that lifelong admiration into the surprise of a lifetime.
According to an ABC7 Chicago exclusive, Greenwood, who is battling an aggressive form of cancer and does not know how much time she has left, had one deeply personal wish: to meet Randy Travis.
Her care team at City of Hope Chicago initially hoped to arrange a Zoom call with the Country Music Hall of Famer. Travis and his wife, Mary, had something far more meaningful in mind.
“We thought, ‘You know what? We can do one better than a Zoom,’” Mary shared. “We’ll just zoom on up to Zion.”
And that is exactly what they did.
Randy Travis Traveled From Texas to Surprise Her
Rather than appearing through a computer screen, Randy and Mary Travis flew from Texas to Illinois to meet Greenwood in person.
The emotional surprise brought Greenwood face-to-face with the artist whose music has meant so much to her throughout her life, and whose personal journey has given her strength during her own health battle.
Travis suffered a severe stroke in 2013 and has spent the years since navigating its lasting effects with determination, faith and the unwavering support of Mary.
Greenwood’s loved ones said she has followed his recovery closely and found comfort in the way he has continued moving forward despite extraordinary challenges.
“Over the last couple of decades, she’s appreciated the amazing journey that he’s been on through his own health challenges,” a City of Hope representative explained. “She’s been able to relate to that. So today, for her to meet her hero is just so special for all of us.”
A Shared Decision to “Choose Joy Over Defeat”
For Mary, the visit was not only about granting a fan’s wish. She saw a powerful connection between Greenwood and her husband.
“The patient that we’re seeing today has the same heart, the same attitude that Randy does,” Mary said. “And that’s to choose joy over defeat.”
That spirit filled the room as Travis greeted Greenwood, posed for photographs and helped create a memory her family will treasure forever.
Greenwood’s family also brought along one of her most meaningful possessions: a Randy Travis poster she had protected through years of moves and always dreamed of having him sign.
“She’s moved to a lot of houses,” a family member shared. “We can’t lose that poster. And so I found it, and it was still in her bedroom at home.”
The poster finally received the signature it had been waiting for.
“Forever and Ever, Amen” Made the Moment Even Sweeter
As Travis’ beloved Grammy-winning anthem “Forever and Ever, Amen” played in the background, the two posed together for cameras, a lifelong fan and her hero now connected by far more than music.
The moment served as a powerful reminder of the promise Travis made at the beginning of his career.
Mary recalled him once saying that if his music could touch even one life, he would feel as though he had done his job.
Decades later, the answer is undeniable.
Randy Travis has touched millions.
But on this day in Chicago, he made one fan feel like the only person in the world.
Before leaving, Randy and Mary also spent time visiting with hospital staff and thanking the people caring for Greenwood and other patients at City of Hope.
What started as a request for a virtual hello became a flight across the country, a signed poster, a cherished photograph and one final wish fulfilled with extraordinary kindness.
For Greenwood and her family, it was the surprise of a lifetime.
For country music fans, it was another beautiful reminder that Randy Travis’ greatest legacy may not only be the songs he has sung, but the lives he continues to touch.
