Chris Stapleton may be one of country music’s most recognizable voices today, but back in the early days, not everyone knew who he was and apparently, some still don’t.

During an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, the Grammy-winning artist swapped stories with Hudson about mistaken identity. While Hudson joked that she often gets confused for Coco Jones or Megan Thee Stallion but never herself, Stapleton recalled a time when someone mistook him for a rock icon at the Grammys, of all places.
“The first time I ever went to the Grammys, I was in line with my band The SteelDrivers,” Stapleton said, painting the scene of an unglamorous but humbling moment. “Some guy just starts losing his mind, telling me how much he loves my music. And I thought, wow, this is wild, somebody actually knows us.”
But there was a catch. “Finally, I looked at him and said, ‘Man, you don’t even know who I am, do you?’ And he goes, ‘Yeah, you’re in Lynyrd Skynyrd, right?’” Stapleton laughed. “And I had to say, ‘No, no, that’s not me. But thank you.’”
The story is classic Stapleton: humble, humorous, and grounded, a reminder that even the artists who now command stages and rack up awards once had to navigate being unknown in the industry. His anecdote also underscores the quirky unpredictability of fame, sometimes you’re mistaken for someone else, even when standing in line at one of music’s biggest nights.
For fans, it’s yet another glimpse at the wit and warmth behind Stapleton’s soulful grit. And for anyone who’s ever been misidentified in public? Well, at least you’ve never been confused with Lynyrd Skynyrd on Grammy night.
