Darryl Worley Says “Have You Forgotten?” May Be More Important Than Ever, 25 Years After 9/11 {EXCLUSIVE}
The country hitmaker sat down with All Country News to reflect on his defining song ahead of a powerful performance at The Boot Bash on September 24.
More than two decades after Darryl Worley first asked America one unforgettable question, “Have You Forgotten?” continues to carry a weight few songs ever achieve.
Ahead of his performance at The Boot Bash on September 24, Worley sat down with All Country News to reflect on the song’s deeply personal origins, its evolving purpose and why its message may be more important than ever as the nation marks 25 years since the September 11 attacks.
“I question daily if we have forgotten,” Worley tells All Country News. “Does anyone today remember what it was like to be a country united as Americans, with love for each other and with one purpose, to uphold our country’s standards of life?”
The Moment That Inspired “Have You Forgotten?”
Although the song became inseparable from the events of September 11, Worley did not write it in the immediate aftermath of the attacks. More than a year had passed before he and co-writer Wynn Varble put those emotions into words.
During that time, Worley had traveled overseas to perform for American troops deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. When he returned home, he noticed that many of the visible signs of unity and patriotism that appeared after 9/11 were beginning to disappear.
“When I came back and was driving home, I noticed all the flags and signs of patriotism that were so present and prevalent everywhere immediately following 9/11 were gone,” he recalls. “I looked at the news, and we were a nation divided again over politics and war.”
For Worley, the shift was heartbreaking. He remembered how the attacks had briefly erased divisions and brought Americans together through shared grief, fear and determination.
“During that event, we did not see differences,” he says. “We saw Americans needing Americans because outside forces were trying to destroy us.”
Those emotions came pouring out when Worley and Varble sat down to write.
“‘Have You Forgotten?’ just flowed out of us as a plea to our nation to never forget our fellow Americans and to always honor our first responders and military who, before, during and after 9/11, were—and still are—defending our safety and rights,” Worley explains. “That message is as relevant today.”
A Song That Became Part of American History
A new generation of listeners now sings along to “Have You Forgotten?”—including many who were not yet born on September 11, 2001. Rather than diminishing the song’s purpose, Worley believes the passing of time has made its message even more essential.
“‘Have You Forgotten?’ has become an authentic piece of American history that I believe will stand the test of time,” he tells All Country News. “Its purpose will live on forever because the message is timeless.”
Worley hopes the song encourages younger listeners to learn about the attacks, ask questions and understand the sacrifices made by those who served.
“I hope people who hear this who were not born during that time seek to find out about what happened that day and ask questions about the events leading up to and following 9/11,” he shares. “I hope this song helps educate people about 9/11.”
While “Have You Forgotten?” has occasionally been pulled into political conversations, Worley insists that was never its intended purpose. At its heart, the song is about remembrance, sacrifice and gratitude.
“It was never meant to be any kind of political statement, even though it landed me in that arena several times because of misinterpretation,” he says. “The song is a tribute written to honor those who serve.”
It also stands as a memorial to the lives lost on September 11 and a reminder of what the country endured together.
“When I look at our landscape today and all the things taking place in America, I can’t help but wonder: Have our people forgotten?”
“Three Chords and the Truth”
Every performance of the song still takes Worley back to the morning of the attacks. He remembers arriving home exhausted from the road before being awakened by his roommate, who yelled for him to turn on the television.
“I could not believe what I was seeing,” Worley recalls. “All I could think was I had to get back to Savannah, to my family, and be sure they were okay. I jumped in my truck and headed home. That fear, horror, uncertainty and sadness were so intense.”
The song also brings back memories of his time overseas, traveling between military bases, witnessing the dangers faced by service members and seeing the unbearable grief of families welcoming fallen heroes home.
Worley remembers riding home alongside soldiers in caskets and seeing devastated families waiting at airports. He also remembers conversations with service members who understood the risks they faced but willingly accepted them to protect their country.
Those experiences permanently changed him.
“It’s probably the easiest song I have ever written because it is absolutely three chords and the truth,” he reflects. “This song made me a better man, a better citizen and a better Christian.”
Ultimately, Worley hopes its message reaches beyond patriotism and encourages listeners to care for one another. He points to the command found in Matthew 22:39: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Darryl Worley Will Perform “Have You Forgotten?” at The Boot Bash
Worley will bring “Have You Forgotten?” to a particularly meaningful stage when he performs at The Boot Bash on Thursday, September 24, at The Grove Golf Club in College Grove, Tennessee.
Presented by Memories of Honor, The Boot Bash replaces black-tie formality with cowboy boots for an evening dedicated to America’s fallen heroes and the families they left behind.
The premier fundraising event will feature intimate acoustic performances, chef-curated tapas, premium drinks and live and silent auctions. All attendees will also have access to the Fireside Lounge, an inviting outdoor retreat where guests can gather, discover featured brands and enjoy curated tastings and other special offerings.
Worley will be joined by Shane Minor, Navy veteran Brooks Herring, Butter & Grit, Aaron Nichols and Noah Hunton.
One hundred percent of the event’s proceeds will directly support Memories of Honor and its work preserving the Boots of Honor Memorial, where nearly 8,000 combat boots represent predominantly post-9/11 military lives lost. Plans are also underway to expand the monument to honor those who were lost before 9/11.
Funds will additionally support the Music Remembers Project, which honors the families of fallen heroes through the healing and connective power of music.
