The Birth of a Hit: Behind the Scenes of “Cowgirls”
Morgan Wallen's “Cowgirls” is a track that perfectly exemplifies the genre-blending innovation happening at EMPIRE. The journey of this hit song began with EMPIRE's own James Maddocks, who co-produced the track alongside Wallen and ERNEST. With a background that spans an impressive range of genres, including collaborations with H.E.R., Lil Baby, and Khalid, Maddocks brings a unique perspective to country music that’s reshaping the genre.
In an exclusive interview with All Country News, James Maddocks opens up about the creation of “Cowgirls”:
Can you walk us through the creative process behind "Cowgirls"? How did the collaboration between you, Morgan Wallen, and ERNEST come about? “I initially envisioned ‘Cowgirls’ with a rap/hip-hop vibe, completely different from what it became. The idea was simple—just four chords, a couple of vocal chops, and a top line. I didn't think much of it at first. Later, when I heard a draft of the song, I knew it had potential. I must’ve listened to that draft at least 100 times. The collaboration with Morgan and ERNEST came about organically, evolving from those initial ideas into the standout track it is today.”
What was your role in co-producing "Cowgirls"? Were there specific elements or ideas you brought to the track that you’re particularly proud of? “My role was to spark the initial concept, and I’m proud of that starting point. The track’s evolution—from a simple idea in my bedroom in France to a top-charting hit—was driven by the collective creativity of Charlie Handsome, ERNEST, Ashley Gorley, and Rocky Block. We all contributed to turning that initial spark into a hit, and I’m especially proud of how it all came together.”
How did you approach blending traditional country sounds with more modern influences in "Cowgirls"? “I didn’t set out to create a country song. My background in rap, hip-hop, and pop heavily influenced the initial sound. When I sent the idea to Charlie Handsome, he knew exactly how to merge those modern influences with traditional country elements. That blend is what makes ‘Cowgirls’ unique and special.”
What role do you believe producers like yourself play in shaping the direction of country music? How do you see this role evolving as the genre continues to grow and change? “Producers like me are here to introduce new sounds and ideas into country music. ‘Cowgirls’ is an example of how we can infuse modern elements while respecting country’s core values—great songwriting. As the genre evolves, it will become more competitive, and while hip-hop influences will play a part, the essence of country music should always be rooted in its songwriting tradition.”
EMPIRE's Expanding Influence in Country Music
EMPIRE’s success with “Cowgirls” is not an isolated achievement. The label, which launched in Nashville five years ago with Willie Jones’ debut album, now boasts a diverse roster including Shaboozey, Reyna Roberts, Randy Houser, and emerging stars like Wyatt Flores and Don Louis. This summer’s hit is a testament to EMPIRE’s growing influence across genres and its ability to merge traditional country with innovative sounds.
Al McLean, SVP and Global Head of Music at EMPIRE Publishing, reflects on this success: “As EMPIRE continues to thrive in Afro Beats, Hip Hop, and R&B, it’s thrilling to see our expansion into country music with back-to-back #1 hits. This achievement is a testament to the vision and dedication of our team, including Eric Hurt and Brett Sweeney, who have been instrumental in building our talented roster.”
With the success of “Cowgirls” and the burgeoning talent within its roster, EMPIRE Publishing is set to continue making waves in the country music industry. The label's ability to blend genres and push boundaries while maintaining a core focus on exceptional songwriting promises an exciting future for both the label and the artists it represents.
