Grappling with goodbye, Johnny's ability to take a staple Music Row theme and make it fresh showcases not only his artistry but thoughtfulness. "Breaking Up," is a perfect marriage between country and rock sensibilities, the hard hitting track breaks through the noise. Narrating the acute feeling of the grief we feel when we realize that a love as pulled out of the drive one last time. Relishing in the loss, Gates relishes in the fact that the goodbye is forever. The track showcases his blue collar toughness and universal appeal.
"Breaking Up" is a song I wrote by myself, about the reality of a break up, truly settling in. I took some time away from country music as an artist, and focused more on writing for other artists, and launching my punk band, johnny was here," Gates shared with All Country News.
"After getting a few country singles as a writer, with artists such as Josh Ross (universal) Sam Grow (Average Joes) Blake Wood (Deluge) and punk artists Winona Fighter (Rise / BMG) and Aaron Gillespie (Underoath) , I’ve decided to release a double record, with side A being my country / Americana solo project, and side B my punk band. I’ll be releasing 2 singles a month, on the same day, all year, one from each side. Breaking Up was produced by Sam Grow, and it’s being released on East Music Row Records, a label I co founded, with my publisher, Deluge Music."
Feverishly dynamic, Johnny's approach to storytelling is impressive. The riser's innate ability to pull acute emotion from a storyline and share it with others is a seldom find in the genre today. It is only up from here from this promising talent.
