Matt Cooper Makes Devotion Sound Downright Irresistible on “Wonder”

Matt Cooper knows a love song can sweep someone off their feet. With “Wonder,” he wants to give them solid ground to land on, too.

Out now, the spirited new single pairs a head-over-heels premise with a promise that carries some weight: life will give you plenty to worry about, but his loyalty won’t be one of them. It’s a reassuring message with a flirtatious pulse, giving country romance a welcome shot of confidence.
For the newlywed, that promise is personal. Cooper co-wrote “Wonder” and dedicates it to his wife, Charis, drawing from the trust that holds their relationship together while his career takes him out on the road.
“‘Wonder’ is about my wife, Charis,” Cooper explains. “It’s about the fact that when I’m out on the road, she never has to wonder where my eyes are, she knows right where my heart is. That kind of trust is rare, and I wanted the song to feel the way that trust feels: steady, honest, and sure of itself.”
That idea gives “Wonder” its strongest footing. Being crazy about someone makes for a good chorus. Understanding what helps them feel secure gives that chorus a reason to matter.
Cooper builds the song around the distinction between everything his partner might wonder about and the wandering eyes she’ll never have to question. It’s a clever turn of phrase with an uncomplicated sentiment behind it: he knows who he wants. The “steady as a heartbeat” assurance brings that devotion into focus, making commitment feel like something alive and instinctive.
And Cooper has no intention of letting all that sincerity sit still.
He produced “Wonder” himself, pursuing a dance-driven feel with country elements woven into the arrangement. The fiddle was a deliberate part of that vision, bringing a country accent to a track designed to move.
“I wanted a dance-type feel with country elements — that is the whole reason for the fiddle in the song,” he shares with All Country News.
Getting there took some experimentation. According to Cooper, “Wonder” went through four or five drafts, evolving from an instrumental opening into what he describes as a “reverb chorus feel with a slap bass verse.” Those choices reveal an artist thinking carefully about how to give a straightforward love song its own personality. The rhythmic approach lends the premise some swagger; the country elements keep it connected to his musical roots.
It’s a fitting framework for a song about being both completely smitten and completely sure. There’s room for attraction, movement and a little heat inside a dependable relationship. Cooper makes that the appeal.
“Wonder” finds its charm in a man who is happy to leave no doubt. He’s in love, he means it, and he’s willing to put his name to the promise.
Good guys still exist. Matt Cooper would like to offer his wife a dance-floor-ready reminder.
