Dolly Parton Thought Her Wedding Dress Was Gone, You Won’t Believe Where It Turned Up
Dolly’s creative director, Steve Summers, shared the unexpected discovery behind one of the most personal treasures in her new Nashville museum.
Of all the places you might expect to find Dolly Parton’s wedding dress, a grocery bag probably isn’t on your list.
But according to her longtime creative director, Steve Summers, that’s exactly where it had been waiting, tucked inside a trunk belonging to her husband, Carl Dean.
For years, Dolly believed the dress was gone. Then, while sorting through the archives, her niece, Rebecca Seaver, came across something extraordinary: the dress, still inside the paper bag where it had been placed decades earlier.
An ordinary bag. An old trunk. A piece of country music history hiding inside.
And the detail about how it got there? That might be the most Dolly part of the entire story.
Summers explained that Dolly had changed out of her wedding dress to head to the recording studio, placing it in a grocery bag and putting it inside the trunk. Decades later, the discovery left Rebecca wondering whether she was really looking at the missing dress.
She was.
Summers had a fitting description for the unexpected find: “That’s a God wink.”
For an artist whose wardrobe has delivered enough rhinestones, fringe and sparkle to fill a country fan’s wildest dreams, this particular dress carries a different kind of magic. Its significance comes from the intimate moment it represents.
Now, that once-hidden piece of Dolly’s story has a place where fans can appreciate it.
The wedding dress is on display at Dolly’s Life of Many Colors Museum, located inside Dolly Parton’s SongTeller Hotel in Nashville. Its case evokes the chapel where Dolly and Carl married, bringing a deeply personal chapter of her life into the museum experience.
Leave it to Dolly to give even a grocery bag a place in an unforgettable story.
