Wesko recently sat down with All Country News to discuss the inspiration behind his haunting new EP, Familiar Spirits, a project that fearlessly dives into grief, trauma, loneliness, reckless desire, and emotional ruin with striking honesty.
Finding Beauty Inside Heavy Emotions
“I try to write all my songs based completely on emotions and what a listener would feel,” Wesko explains. “However dark it might be, people tend to feel sadness in a much deeper way than other emotions; guttural, in a way. Emotion is a beautiful gift from God, no need to shy away from it.”
That philosophy radiates throughout Familiar Spirits. The EP doesn’t simply tell stories — it drags listeners directly into them. Every lyric feels lived-in, every melody weighted with intention. There’s a rawness here that recalls the great storytellers of Americana and heartland rock, yet Wesko still manages to carve out a sound entirely his own.
“Hunting Ghosts” Captures Loneliness at Its Most
Dangerous
One of the project’s emotional standouts, “Hunting Ghosts,” captures isolation in its ugliest and most dangerous form. The song aches with quiet desperation, painting vivid images of loneliness spiraling into self-destruction.
While the track feels intensely personal, Wesko says its deeper message is universal.
“Loneliness is an emotion everybody has felt at one point or another,” he says. “Hunting Ghosts, however, is more of my take on the way that loneliness can become a problem in a person’s life if left unchecked.”
That emotional honesty is what gives the EP its power. Wesko never over-explains or dramatizes; instead, he trusts the listener to sit with the weight of the songs themselves. The result is a collection that feels deeply intimate without ever becoming self-indulgent.
Reimagining a Springsteen Classic
Another standout moment arrives with Wesko’s chilling reinterpretation of Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m On Fire.” Covering such an iconic song is always a risk, but Wesko approaches it with reverence and purpose rather than imitation.
A longtime admirer of Springsteen’s work, Wesko points specifically to Nebraska as a major creative influence.
“I discovered the true depth of Bruce’s work in Nebraska,” he says. “That album has heavily inspired much of my work over the past couple years.”
That influence is easy to hear across Familiar Spirits. Like Springsteen at his most stripped-down and emotionally devastating, Wesko finds beauty inside bleakness. His version of “I’m On Fire” transforms the song’s simmering lust into something darker and far more ominous.
“I wanted to focus on slowing it down, making it darker, and painting the idea of a burning desire in a different way,” Wesko explains. “A type of desire that could burn you up if you aren’t careful.”
It’s a stunning reimagining that fits seamlessly into the world of Familiar Spirits, reinforcing the project’s themes of longing, temptation, and emotional unrest.
Honest Songwriting Still Matters
What makes Familiar Spirits particularly compelling is how grounded it feels in everyday American life. Wesko writes about ordinary people carrying extraordinary emotional weight, workers, drifters, lonely souls trying to survive their own thoughts. There’s grit in these songs, but also empathy.
Still, Wesko insists the project’s purpose is simple.
“The only thing I hope listeners take away from the EP is that songwriting is supposed to be as honest as possible,” he says. “It’s an emotional experience that you can relate to and feel on a very deep level.”
That honesty is exactly what makes Familiar Spirits such a striking release. In a musical landscape often obsessed with perfection and polish, Wesko delivers something far more meaningful: truth. And sometimes, truth hits the hardest.
